Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
