Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
