Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
