Sheffield Wednesday Faces Serious Challenges, Says New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

The team's current difficulties constitute a "significant problem" and the new football authority is looking to gain the ability to look into club affairs in similar circumstances, the recently named head the regulator has declared.

In a wide-ranging interview, the chairman, who was recently selected, showed understanding towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four supporter groups associated with the South Yorkshire club this week.

The football club have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"The club represents one of the great brands for English football and recently we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will enable us to take Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they warrant scrutiny and addressed."

Financial Struggles and Proprietorship Status

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri suggested earlier this year he would be willing to sell up at Hillsborough, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with interested parties.

Delayed salary payments on time in March and May caused limitations by the league officials in summer, blocking the team from conducting any player acquisitions for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in the end of the transfer window.

Regulator's Perspective

The regulator explained: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has been part of their lives in numerous instances.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for each organization that over recent decades have faced collapse, or approached financial ruin, for causes separate from the followers."

Inquired if the regulator could force an owner to sell a club if they are deemed unsuitable, Kogan said: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we collect the information and understand the situation, we will."

But the regulator clarified that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the regulator would prefer to work with them.

"The final option we would consider is start getting involved with an specific team, an particular chairman, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that chairman to fix the challenges confronting the team and the owner's facing," Kogan said.

"But the truth is, when you review the record of football, over the recent generations there have been certain proprietors, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their clubs and ultimately refuse to accept accountability for the long-term prospects."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

Kogan met with officials from numerous teams to detail the scope of the oversight body this week and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "substantial involvement" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if we get it wrong, if the football community fails, the significant advances achieved necessary will vanish rapidly," Kogan said.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a substantial accomplishment - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money entering the sport and has been channeled for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will persist in entering the game, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on potential dangers and naturally, of the coming seasons."

Premier League Concerns

Top flight officials resisted the creation of a regulator because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the success and growth as an economic entity of the top division.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the division as a high-quality offering of the nation. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Partisan Associations

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he revealed he contributed money to the political party in 2020.

The chairman provided financial support for Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I've been completely open about my past party membership [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," Kogan said.

"I am no longer involved in any sort of politics."
