The English along with Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a group together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
