The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
